Single mother Sheridan Greer locked her two Staffordshire Bull terriers in the kitchen, without either food or water, after she split up with her boyfriend and moved out of her house in England.
Her one-year-old puppy Patch and 18-month-old dog Duke had no option but to scavenge desperately from trash bags and cupboards and eventually were forced to eat empty tin cans and old dish cloths.
Sheridan Greer, 23, locked her young Staffordshire Bull terriers in the kitchen without food or water.
Greer has now admitted causing unnecessary suffering to her dogs and was handed an 18-week suspended prison sentence.
She was also ordered to pay the equivalent of $300 in costs and a $120 victim surcharge and has been banned from keeping pets for life.
Authorities raided her home and found the carcasses of the two canines, dumped in the back yard amid trash bags full of garbage.
Greer told the police that she couldn’t care for her pets after her benefits were reduced and she split up with her boyfriend.
She threw her two pet dogs out with the rubbish after leaving them to starve in her empty house for four weeks.
However, instead of contacting the authorities for help with the pets, the woman simply moved out, abandoning the animals for four weeks.
Greer also abandoned her two pet cats, however they survived.
The woman did return to the house on multiple occasions, however she did not give the animals any food or water.
The post mortem stated that both dogs weighed 24 lbs at the time of their death, 20 percent below the 31 lbs they should have weighed.
RSPCA Inspector Lyndsey Taylor said the mess in the house was “appalling” and the smell was “overpowering”.
Greer told investigators that she couldn’t cope looking after her pets after her benefits were reduced and she split up with her boyfriend.
Commenting on the case, RSPCA Inspector Lyndsey Taylor said:
The scene in the house was appalling. The smell was overpowering and the mess was shocking. In the kitchen the two dogs had been left without any food or water.
It seems the dogs had got into the bin and it was clear that they were so hungry that they had tried to eat dog food tins.
There were rags in their system which showed what they had resorted to eating dish cloths or other like items.
Her 12-month-old puppy Patch and 18-month-old pet Duke were forced to scavenge desperately from bin bags.
Leaving those dogs to starve to death is a heartless and callous thing to do. They would have died a slow and painful death.
Seeing those dogs when we first went to the house is an image that will stay with me forever.
They had died in the kitchen and then were thrown out like pieces of rubbish. We understand that after she moved out she had actually been coming back to the property but she still let them starve to death.
She probably couldn’t cope with looking after the pets but that is no excuse for what she did.
Greer also left her two pet cats to fend for themselves, but they survived the four-week ordeal.
